Village Voices Delight Audience with Songs for a Summer Afternoon

The Village Voices Choir welcomed a wonderful audience to Great Wakering Community Centre for our summer concert, "Songs for a Summer's Afternoon", an afternoon filled with music, laughter, friendship and delicious homemade refreshments.
The concert featured a wide variety of well-loved songs spanning several decades. From the uplifting We've Only Just Begun and the timeless My Heart Will Go On to audience favourites including Islands in the Stream, Tea for Two, Something Stupid and Money, Money, Money, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The programme also included beautiful solo performances by Maia, Anne and Peter, together with Brenda's introduction to the Sky Boat Song, creating an entertaining and varied afternoon.
Following the first half, choir members exchanged their music folders for teapots and cake stands as they served guests with a selection of homemade cakes and refreshments. The interval gave everyone the opportunity to chat, catch up with friends and support the choir through our raffle.
The afternoon concluded with our moving rendition of Peace Prayer, bringing a fitting end to another successful community event.

We would like to thank everyone who attended, our wonderful volunteers, those who baked cakes, donated raffle prizes and helped behind the scenes. Most of all, thank you to our loyal supporters whose encouragement enables The Village Voices to continue bringing music to the heart of our community.

If you've ever thought about joining a friendly choir, we'd love to welcome you. There are no auditions, just a warm welcome, plenty of laughter and a shared love of singing.
We look forward to seeing you at our next open rehearsal on Tuesday 8th September commencing at 7.30pm.held at the Community Centre (Old School), 90 High Street, Great Wakering  SS3 0EJ.

Our concerts frequently feature talented soloists and guest groups, adding unique flavours to our musical tapestry. We actively encourage audience participation, particularly engaging children, making each event a truly inclusive and enjoyable experience for all ages.

Singing for our community

Our friendly spirit shines through in every performance location and event we support. Village Voices proudly performs at the 'Saturday Club' at Shoebury Baptist Church, leading two concerts annually. We actively support St Nicholas Church Great Wakering with their cherished 'Last Night at the Proms' concert each year, and during the festive season with 'Christmas Carols in the Churchyard'. The Community Centre (old school) in Great Wakering hosts two of our concerts each year, and we are often involved in various other community events throughout the year. Our busy Christmas season includes visits to care homes in smaller groups and entertaining at the Southend Bowls Club, a firm favourite for supporting our friends there.

Heartwarming memories and musical delights

We cherish many heartwarming memories from our past performances. A particular highlight was in 2023, we welcomed The Festive Brass Band to join us for our Christmas concert. This collaboration was so successful that, by popular request, they returned in 2025 to wow us again with their incredible musical talent.

In 2023, we were delighted to feature Viola soloist Tom Waters, who is now pursuing a career and continued study in music performance.

Our concerts are also known for their delightful, hilarious moments, often involving puppets, props, and playful percussion, adding a unique charm to our shows.
